Be Brave: Why It’s Worth Facing Your Fears
It’s normal to feel fear. We seem to be hard-wired to be afraid of the unknown. This probably protected our species a long time ago from eating poisonous plants and approaching dangerous situations. The way we live our lives now is relatively safe (if we look back through history), but most people remain fearful of getting out of their comfort zone. When it comes to changing our lifestyle, especially making big decisions like getting fit or losing weight it can be scary. You might be afraid of looking silly in front of others. You may be afraid of letting yourself down, or letting down family and friends, or you might be afraid that it’s going to hurt. These are all valid reasons to be scared, but they are usually not valid reasons not to do it. Here are some reasons why it’s important to face your fears.
It gets easier! Each time you make yourself sign up to something new, or start a new job or join a new class it usually gets easier to do it again. It’s always the first session/meeting that is the biggest mental hurdle. What do I wear? Will I know anyone? Will they be nice? What if I can’t get through the entire class? You won’t be the only person thinking this, so no one will judge you. Ask any questions you need answered prior to attending, and go along with an open mind.
You won’t have regrets Even if things don’t work out, at least you will know that you’ve given it a go. The worst thing to do, is not try, and wonder what if. Knowledge is power, and you only gain this knowledge through experiencing and learning new things.
What’s the worst that can happen? It’s never as bad as you think. Someone laughs at you? You fall back into bad habits? It doesn’t matter. You are still better off because you did it for a while. You had a new experience and you’ve learnt something. The experience will only better you for the future, sometimes our greatest learnings are from our mistakes or mishaps.
Be thankful for everything you have and the fact that you have the opportunity to make changes. There are plenty of people in the world who do not have the chance to make significant changes to their lives. Seek support, relax, don’t over think it and just do it!
